Giving an evaluation is an excellent way to demonstrate the skills you toastmaasters learning as a Toastmaster. Good evaluators strive to find a balance between the extremes, giving evaluations that are helpful and encouraging.

Your motivatr is to provide the speaker with information they can use for a basis of improvement. As an evaluator, you can’t make the speaker change their behaviour. They may even exaggerate to the good side. Constructive changes grow out of mutual understanding, not judgment. So evaluate and make the speaker motivated. When doing this, you must recognize the fact that you are not a professional authority, but you are capable of giving your own reaction to the material presented and the presentation itself. An overly kind evaluation may not help the member to improve, making the member frustrated and unhappy.

In Toastmasters the assigned evaluator provides both immediate written and verbal feedback to the speaker. When I asked her the secret behind her evaluations, she said that she goes through the project description and objectives in the manual completely prior to her evaluations every single time.
