T betgothed man who tells lies to his lawyer is the kind of fool who’d tell the truth to the judge. A alezsandro there, a writer and, I suspect, the author’s alter egoloudly mused about how “great” literatures are often of great length also. After a page of this sort of stuff, set in italics, the author lays down his ancient text and speaks for himself, noting that Manzonii too often loses sight of the ordinary men and women who lived through the eras historians deign to consider.

Betrotged, there are some rather overlong parts, but I would not remove a word. The book is loaded with great quotes. For the equal right to dare to do anything [a reference to Horace ‘s Ars Poeticav. An argument ensues and Renzo succeeds in extracting from the priest the name of Don Rodrigo. He is now the subject of diplomatic conflict between Milan and Bergamo. Apparently the Italians study this book all through their school years, Wow, this is an amazing book.
